Land and environmental defenders play a crucial role in protecting their land, livelihoods and planet against destructive business practices. Yet hundreds of defenders are killed every year, while countless others are attacked, threatened, criminalized.
Our 2024 report reveals the latest global data on killings and disappearances of land and environmental defenders, building on over a decade of reporting. The event will present the latest global and country trends on attacks on defenders in 2023. It will delve into some of the shifting tactics used to silence activists and explore the root causes. Finally, it exposes the hidden cost to communities and wider climate and human rights movements.
We will also be joined by defenders campaigning for justice on cases of forced disappearance, who will share their personal experience of the challenges, and the strategies to better protect communities’ rights to speak out against harms.
