Global Witness will host a one-day Events Hub during New York Climate Week 2024. The Hub will provide a location for 2 panel discussions, and a photography exhibition showcasing the work of Global Witness around the world.
Panel 1
Media balance on a one-sided climate crisis
Time: 13:30-15:00 (13:00 arrival)
Overview: The climate crisis is one-sided: one sided in its devasting impact upon people as well as in terms of its root causes. But journalism 101 tells us to cover all sides. So, in the face of unquestionable science and a rapidly warming planet, what does balanced journalism look like? How exactly can and should journalists be telling the stories of those already impacted by the climate crisis? And how do these stories cut through a media landscape that is facing increasing financial pressure and the constant menace of outside disinformation?
Panel 2 & Evening Reception
Preventing Conflict and Protecting Rights in the Renewable Energy Boom; a guide for business and communities
Time: 16:30-18:00 (16:00 arrival), with a reception afterwards
Overview: The transition to renewable energy is crucial for combating climate change. However, the sourcing of transition minerals essential for clean energy technologies often leads to significant human rights and environmental abuses. This panel will address these critical issues by bringing together industry leaders, and communities affected by poor practices, to discuss and develop actionable strategies for sustainable supply chain management.
